    Dorm vs. Apartment

Students weigh the pros, cons and woes of dorm/apartment life

    Dorms

    On-campus dorm residents
, mostly underclassmen, gain independence from their parents but often live at the mercy of cruelly absent temperature controls and beds that come in only one sleep number.

"Many parents buy another mattress in lieu of [the dorm mattress] or put a regular one on top of it.
"Sleeping's a big thing for me," said Michael Poudrier, a computer science freshman, about Moore-Hill Dormitory beds. "It's not as good [at Moore-Hill] as at home."

Garrett Seaman, an architecture freshman living in Jester West Dormitory, is more optimistic about the beds. "The mattresses are kind of hard, but the nice thing is I actually fit on the bed because they're extra long," Seaman said.

Poudrier and Garz's biggest complaint, though, has nothing to do with the dorm's physical set-up.
"I wish there were girls in my dorm," Garz said of all male Moore-Hill.

    Apartments

For Valerie Hoover and Mandy Curi, who recently moved into an apartment complex, Kinsolving Dormitory is a thing of the past.  "We get to buy a bed that's comfortable for us and that fits," said Curi, a liberal arts junior.

They join the thousands of UT students who are living in apartments for this school year.

"What I like [about apartment life] is you don't have to follow rules other than the apartment rules, you don't have to swipe a card to get in," said Hoover, a nutrition senior.  The absence of floor access cards also eases dating life.  "You don't have to sneak in boys," Curi said.

Living in an apartment has allowed the girls to decorate their place as they like it.

    Conclusion

But dorms have their advantages that students living in apartments miss.

Food is also a problem because cafeteria food, no matter how bland, is still more convenient than cooking.
"[We have] a lot of canned vegetables, because we're not at home, and we can't cook vegetables like our parents can," Curi said.

To Hoover and Curi, apartment life retains Kinsolving's community feel without its constraints, and Curi feels living in an apartment has taught her how to budget.  But mainly, apartment life has been fun.  At Kinsolving, the girls had to go out of the dorm to find parties. Here "the party comes to you," Curi said.

Your Search Might Make You Famous !

The Staff at the Student Apartment Roundup recently caught up with a UT Student whose apartment search surprisingly got her on camera during Spring Break 2003.  You may have recognized her face  on the Showtime Series -  "Freshman Diaries".     Rashan Ferguson and her friends won the Shuttle Bus Tours Spring Break referral contest.

SAR:   How did you feel when you and your friends found out you won the
Spring Break Referral Contest?  What made you interested in trying to win
the trip and how did you go about doing it?

Rashan:   At first we were a little skeptical. We thought the trip was going to be horribly put together by some cheesy travel personnel, but Shuttle Bus Tours proved us all wrong! I was so excited when we arrived in South Padre Island. The hotel was gorgeous. The people at Leisure Tours were super fabulous. And the Spring Breakers were off the heezy!! UT took over Padre by a long shot! Everything went according to plan.

As for our interest in winning, I was the person who got my group all pumped up about the trip. I was the leader of the whole idea because I felt like I had worked hard enough to deserve a Spring Break Trip. When it comes to things like this I am the most outgoing out of my clique of friends. We had many friends who planned on moving off campus last semester so we told them to put my name down on the list when they decided to go on the Shuttle Bus Tour. And honestly I would like to win again this year! So everyone out there better watch out! :-)

SAR: What was the best part of your trip to Padre Island? What was it
like being filmed for the Showtime documentary, Freshman Diaries during
your Spring Break Trip to Padre Island?

Rashan:  We met so many celebrities!!!! That was the best part! We met Mystikal, Coolio, Clipse, Naughty by Nature, Snoop Doggy Dogg and Juvenile. 50 Cent had a concert down there but we didn't get a chance to go. Mystikal, Coolio, and Naughty by Nature stayed in the exact hotel we stayed in. Coolio stayed on the same floor with us, he even hung out in our room!! 'Wild On E' filmed me dancing at a foam party at Club XS. While I was being filmed for Freshman Diaries I couldn't believe how much fun I was having. At this time I was adjusted to the cameras following me so it was like second nature. So we just did whatever we felt while the cameras were around. Some crazy girls kept flashing my camera crew thinking they worked for Girls Gone Wild. I am so excited I got my Spring Break on camera, better yet my whole freshman year! We also got into a few parties free with the cameras with us. I think being filmed in Padre made my Spring Break 100 times better than it would have been without it!

SAR:  What aspect of Freshmen Diaries did you enjoy the most and Why?

Rashan:  I love being the center of attention. Everywhere I went people were looking at me trying to figure out who I was. There were people I didn't know speaking to me just to get their few seconds on the camera. I want to become a TV personality/reporter or actress one day so anything to put me in the spotlight is good! I also love the fact that ten years from now I can pop in the tapes of my freshman year at The University of Texas and flashback to all the wonderful times I had here. Hook 'em Horns!

SAR:   Why would you recommend the Shuttle Bus Tours service to others?

Rashan:  I recommend Shuttle Bus Tours to others because they provide a good wholesome service to assist those students who may be reluctant or frightened to finding an apartment for the first time. They all really helped me jump into the apartment search by offering so many options for me to choose from. The people at Shuttle Bus Tours are very communicable and friendly. Thank you so much Shuttle Bus Tours for giving my friends and I our first college Spring Break and helping us find great apartments! I Love You All Like Family!
